RESUMO

Nonvolatile electrical control of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetism is important for spintronic devices. Here, using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the magnetic properties of the MXene Hf2MnC2O2 combined with the ferroelectric MXene Sc2CO2. When flipping the electric polarization of Sc2CO2, a transition between a semiconductor and a half-metal occurs in the Hf2MnC2O2 monolayer. Moreover, the ferromagnetic exchange parameter J1 can be enhanced to 9.67 meV under polarized P↑ of Sc2CO2, much larger than those of the pristine Hf2MnC2O2 monolayer and Hf2MnC2O2/Sc2CO2-P↓. In addition, the easy magnetization axis of the Hf2MnC2O2 monolayer is also dependent on the polarization orientation of Sc2CO2. Our results indicate a multiferroic heterostructure based on MXenes, offering an effective way for obtaining nonvolatile electrical control of electronic and magnetic properties.

RESUMO

Organophosphate esters(OPEs), as a substitute for brominated flame retardants, are widely used in production and life, and their environmental pollution and toxic effects have attracted widespread attention. In this study, the concentrations and distribution characteristics of OPEs in seven major drainage basins of China were sorted out. The average daily dose of OPEs in Chinese adults, adolescents, and children was calculated to assess the health risks, and the reliability of the results was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. The toxic effect concentrations of 12 OPEs on aquatic organisms were investigated, and the species sensitivity distribution(SSD) curve was constructed to assess the ecological risk. The results showed that the 5th percentile concentration of ΣOPEs in the seven drainage basins was 52.61 ng·L-1 under the low exposure scenario. The median concentration of ΣOPEs in the seven basins was 499.74 ng·L-1, with trichloroethyl phosphate(TCEP), triethyl phosphate(TEP), and triethyl phosphate(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) esters(TDCP) as the main contaminants. Under the high exposure scenario, the 95th percentile concentration of ΣOPEs in the seven basins was 1904.4 ng·L-1, 3.8 times that of the intermediate exposure scenario, and the Yangtze River Basin had the highest ΣOPEs concentration under the high exposure scenario. The health risk assessment showed that the non-carcinogenic risk of OPEs exposure through drinking water was within acceptable limits for different populations. Trimethyl phosphate(TMP), triisobutyl phosphate(TiBP), and TCEP were the main contributors to cancer risk. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that TCEP had medium ecological risk at the high exposure level, tributyl phosphate(TnBP) had medium ecological risk under the intermediate exposure scenario, and there was higher ecological risk under the high exposure scenario. Triphenyl phosphate(TPhP) had a risk quotient greater than 1 under the low, intermediate, and high exposure scenarios, and there was a high ecological risk, which requires special attention.

RESUMO

Food is the main way for people to be exposed to heavy metal cadmium (Cd), and Cd pollution will affect human health. In this paper, exposure and health risk assessment of dietary Cd intake were conducted in children aged 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years in East China. The results showed that the total exposure of dietary Cd intake in children exceeded the standard limits. The total exposure of all age groups were 1.11 × 10-3, 1.15 × 10-3, 9.67 × 10-4, 8.75 × 10-4, 9.18 × 10-4, 7.75 × 10-4, 8.24 × 10-4, 7.11 × 10-4 mg kg-1 d-1, respectively, and the highest was the children aged 3 years. The hazard quotients of children aged 2 and 3 years were 1.11 and 1.15, respectively, at an unacceptable health risk level. The hazard quotients of dietary Cd intake in children of other ages were less than 1, at an acceptable health risk level. Staple foods were the most significant contributor to the dietary Cd intake in children, and the contribution ratio of non-carcinogenic risk of dietary Cd intake in all age groups were more than 35%, the proportion of non-carcinogenic risk in children aged 6-8 and 9-11 years were as high as 50%. This study provides scientific basis for the health of children in East China.

RESUMO

Pollution characteristics and spatial distributions of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in surface water samples were investigated in Taihu Lake in 2010 and 2019, respectively. A hybrid model based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and the health risk assessment model were employed for quantifying the contributions of sources to PFASs concentrations and the source risks. The method contained two stages:1 the sources of PFASs were apportioned using the PMF model, and 2 the contribution of health risks from each source was quantitively estimated. Three factors (source categories) were extracted using PMF, including:coating industry sources, textile and electroplating sources, and fluoride-processing industry sources. Their contributions to PFASs concentration were 29.59%, 25.68%, and 44.72% for 2010 and 67.69%, 10.26%, 22.05%, for 2019, respectively. The health risk of PFASs in the water assessed by the health risk assessment (HRA) model was 4.56E-07 for 2010 and 2.69E-07 for 2019, which was lower than 1E-06. The source contributions to health risks estimated by the PMF-HRA hybrid model were:64.86% (2010) and 92.48% (2019) for textile and electroplating sources, 31.30% (2010) and 5.04% (2019) for coating industry sources, and 3.84% (2010) and 2.48% (2019) for fluoride-processing industry sources. For the two years, the concentrations of PFOA and PFOS were reduced significantly, indicating the effective control of their emissions during the past ten years in Taihu Lake. However, it was also shown that the concentrations of PFBS and PFHxS were increased. These findings suggest that the above short chain-PFCs species should be the focus for further control and management, and their health risks should be studied in future research.

RESUMO

The occurrence and risk of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has become a global concern in recent years. This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential sources of thirteen OPEs and their associated ecological and human health risks in water samples from the largest freshwater lake, Poyang Lake, together with its five major inflow rivers and the water channel to Yangtze River. The total OPEs concentrations ranged from 38.44 ng/L to 428.94 ng/L, and the largest tributary Ganjiang River was much more polluted than other rivers. Chlorinated OPEs, such as tris (1-chloro2-propyl) phosphate and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate occupied the dominant composition of OPEs in the research area. Principal component analysis with multiple linear regression, positive matrix factorization, and correlation analysis were used to apportion the potential sources of OPEs in surface water. The combined contribution of polyvinyl chloride, polyester resins, and polyurethane foam (68.64%), antifoam agent and hydraulic fluids (21.50%), and the release of decorative materials and electric equipment from indoor (9.86%) were identified as the OPEs sources in the study region. The risk quotients (RQs) showed the ecological risk was negligible, but 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate exposures posed medium ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of the target OPEs were below the theoretical risk threshold values, however, toddlers were much more sensitive to the OPEs exposure in surface water than teenagers and adults. Oral ingestion was the principal exposure pathway, and the health risk via oral ingestion was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than dermal contact exposure route.

RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution and hazards are a global major concern. Heavy metals can be directly or indirectly harmful to humans through ingestion, inhalation, and deraml. According to the literature survey, cadmium (Cd) total exposure assessment and health risk assessment were performed in a population group from South China. Results showed that the Cd contents in PM2.5 and vegetables exceeded national standard limits. The same sources of Cd pollution contributed to different media; the main sources were artificial industrial activities such as electroplating, mining and smelting. The average daily dose of Cd via ingestion exceeded the provisional tolerable monthly intake proposed by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Multimedia exposure via all three pathways followed the order 0-5-year-old children (3.26 × 10-3 mg kg-1·d-1)>6-17-year-old children (1.46 × 10-3 mg kg-1·d-1)>adults (1.18 × 10-3 mg kg-1·d-1). The exposure from point source pollution was quite different from the results for nonpoint sources. Ingestion was the exposure pathway that contributes the largest proportion of multipathway and multimedia total exposure, accounting for over 99% of the total exposure in different populations. Staple foods, vegetables and meat were the three main exposure media for ingestion. The hazard quotients of multipathway and multimedia exposure to Cd in different populations were 5.57, 2.87 and 2.26, respectively, all at unacceptable risk levels. This study highlights the importance of multipathway and multimedia in the health risk assessment of heavy metal exposure in South China, and provides risk management measures to reduce noncarcinogenic health risks.

RESUMO

Water is an important pathway for human exposure to heavy metals. Accurate assessment of the health risks that are related to exposure to heavy metals in drinking and household water are required for the preparation of targeted health risk prevention measures. This study explores and identifies the health risks related to exposure to heavy metals via drinking and household water pathways in Xigu District, Lanzhou, northwestern China, using household water samples and survey data obtained during July-September 2015 (wet season) and December 2015-January 2016 (dry season). During each period, drinking water and household water that were available for use by children aged 0-5 and 6-17 years were sampled and a questionnaire on water-related behavior patterns was completed for each household. Cd, Cr, Pb, and As concentrations were analyzed in all water samples, and were used along with water-related exposure factors from the questionnaires to estimate exposure doses and associated health risks using models recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, and As in both drinking and household water samples did not exceed the relative thresholds defined in China's national water quality standards. The concentrations of heavy metals in household water were more affected by seasonal factors than of those of drinking water. The non-cancer and cancer risks were in the ranges of 2.82×10-8-2.43×10-2 and 7.55×10-9-3.62×10-5, respectively, which are within acceptable levels, although the non-cancer and cancer risks from drinking water were both higher than of those determined for household water. Furthermore, the non-cancer and cancer risks from household water for children aged 0-5 years were lower than of those for children aged 6-17 years in each period. However, the cancer risk from drinking water for children aged 0-5 years was lower than of that for children aged 6-17 years, whereas the reverse was found for non-cancer risks. This study indicates that Cd, Cr, Pb, and As in drinking and household water did not pose significant detrimental effects to human health, and that the refined exposure assessment used could reduce uncertainties in health risk assessments.
